Some information

"JNM Children’s Village" is our base, in the city of Adwa, in the northern region of Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea, at a height of 1,900 mt.

It was built in a very short time, as the works started in January 2004, and were accomplished in February 2005.

The Village hosts the abandoned orphan children of the area.

We have built a well to face water shortage, and an enclosing wall to protect the village from wild animals, especially hyenas. A power generator has also been installed to face electricity shortage.

The village has a kitchen garden, with vegetables and fruit trees, covering most of our needs. For other food supplies, we use the local shops and Saturday market.

The presence of the village in the area contributes to support and develop the local economy, as we buy here most of the necessary supplies, including the gas-oil for our two vehicles (one of which is used as an ambulance).

Hosting orphan children

The number of orphans in Ethiopia is huge. Diseases, like Aids and tuberculosis are pretty much diffused, and mortality rate for women in childbirth is 1/9. With the death of their parents, children find themselves alone and abandoned, and it is not uncommon to find little girls or boys of 10/11 years who have the role of family head, providing for the needs of their younger brothers and sisters.

We have found little girls of 5/6 years obliged to work as cleaning ladies for some old beggars.

In the "Village " these children find a home, a "Heaven" ", taking them away from a terrible reality.

Orphans are often brought to the village by the local police, who find them abandoned in various places, or by their own relatives, after the death of their mother.

The Village is made of 16 houses, where families of 6/8 children live. Totally, after 5 years, we have 100/120 children, entrusted to the care of local women, whom we selected and trained, and who became, by all means, their real mothers.

Francesco and Nevia are a reference point both for the children and for the mothers. They coordinate and supervise the children's education, analyze and evaluate the individual problems of the children, and give the necessary indications.

School education is integrated with English courses organized within the village, and with the availability of support teachers helping children in their homework. The Village also has a nursery school for preschool children.

Children stay in the Village till the age of 18, when they have completed school education, and attended professional training courses. They will be followed also after they live the Village, to help them find a job in town. Part of the money received with the distance adoption is put aside for this purpose.

In the Village, there is also a Community (multipurpose) facility, where we have lunch or dinner all together, at least once a week, we hold craft training courses for the women we assist and for the mothers of children in the Emergency Centre, and where children can study.

There is also a play area for children, and some administrative offices, which we also use to meet those who come to request help and support.
